The very first Skeeter boat was produced by Holmes Thurmond in 1948 just after World War II. He began his enterprise in Shreveport, LA, and it wasn’t long before Skeeter boats became a leading manufacturer in the south. The company name originates from the fact that the initial flat-bottom wooden boats consisted of long, needle-like noses that resembled a mosquito’s proboscis.
In the 1950s, Skeeter became one of the first boat manufacturers to use a fiberglass construction, which made it possible to produce larger boats in a wide range of styles. The company moved to a bigger location in Longview, TX, in 1961, and started producing tri-hull boats over the next few years.
The company continued to grow over the next few decades. Skeeter boats moved to Kilgore, TX, which is the current official headquarters. More and more types of boats came about, including larger 20’ bass boats and saltwater-specific boats. In 1998, the company celebrated 50 years in business and has continued to flourish with the new addition of digital technology and more modern boat construction techniques.
If there is one thing that Skeeter boats are known for, it’s their superior engineering professionals. Each model is carefully designed to provide you with the best performance possible. Some of the newer models come with a redesigned hull that’s ideal for riding on rough waters and precise handling around fishing holes.
It makes sense that that level of engineering then translates to better performance features. The Torque Transfer System, for instance, was implemented when Skeeter noticed how the heavier outboards were applying too much extra weight to the back of the boats. Instead of adding even more fiberglass, the company constructed hulls that offered better weight distribution throughout the craft. This is yet another amazing innovation by Skeeter boats that is changing the marine industry as we know it.
