Mercury/Mariner does not code the model year into the model number or serial number. The model year is determined by the first serial number sold during the model year. Example: Merc 115ELPTO with serial OT123456 could be 2001 and OT123457 could be 2002.

Johnson and Evinrude Model year codes
Johnson outboards prior to 1969-1980. The year is in the Model number (not the serial number) Example: Johnson 1969 115hp = J115EL69S.
The number highlighted here in red is the year.

Evinrude outboards 1969-1980. The model year is in the Model number as the first digit after the horsepower. Example: Evinrude 1975 75hp=E75543B. In this instance the red “5” is the model year.

Johnson/Evinrude outboards from 1981 forward uses a two letter code derived from the word Introduces to establish the model year. See matrix below.
